Why I Choose to Homeschool as a Working Mom
I’m a mom of two girls who runs a business, manages a career, and juggles family life…and I also made the choice to homeschool.
But why?
Why would any career woman give up eight uninterrupted hours of work every day just to take on being the lead of her kids’ education?
The truth is that homeschooling gives our kids something traditional school never could, and the benefits are simply too powerful to ignore.
As a working mom, it might seem easier to put my kids on the bus or drop them off at school so I can focus on my career, but I chose the more complex road on purpose.
So I homeschool my kids not because it simplifies my schedule, but because it gives them an elite education, unique opportunities, and real-world experiences they could never get sitting in a classroom all day.
Here are the three biggest reasons I made this choice, and why I know it will positively impact my kids for life.
A Tailored, Well-Rounded Education
Traditional school has to take a one-size-fits-all approach. There are simply too many kids in each classroom to personalize learning for every child.
But with homeschooling, I can design a robust, well-rounded education that's personalized for my kids. It connects to their interests, honors their culture, and supports how they learn best.
We can take a deep dive into Black history and literature, experiment with STEM projects, or take a day trip to visit a historical marker and turn it into a living lesson.
When you homeschool, you’re not just assigning textbooks and asking your kids to read within the lines. You’re creating an intentional, customized education that helps them flourish in ways a traditional classroom never could.
Real-Life Exposure to Business and Entrepreneurship
Here’s something most kids never get (myself included): a front-row seat to how ideas become income.
Even when I was working a 9–5 job, my girls got exposure to the world of work. They saw me prepare for meetings, collaborate with colleagues, and manage deadlines. That was valuable in itself.
Now, as an entrepreneur, they see even more. They watch me brainstorm, plan, launch - and sometimes even fail - and then get back up again. That’s a priceless education.
And because we homeschool, I can include them in that journey. Sometimes it looks like helping with small tasks in my business. Other times it’s encouraging them to dream up their own business ideas. Instead of waiting until adulthood to learn how work and creativity connect, my girls are already discovering that building something for yourself is possible at any age.
That kind of exposure plants seeds of confidence and creativity they’ll carry forever.
Expanding Horizons Beyond Academics
When I went off to college, I had no idea what I wanted to do with the rest of my life.
People told me, “You’re smart and you love to talk. You’d make a great lawyer.” So I thought pre-law was my path.
But looking back, I realize I would have hated it.
I had never been exposed to what lawyers actually do because my only reference point was what I saw on TV. But in reality, lawyers do a tremendous amount of studying (sometimes really dry material), and I know I would have hated every minute of it.
No one ever challenged me to think about what I liked or what inspired me. And that’s one of the dangers of being singularly focused on academics: you gain very little context for what’s possible in the real world.
I don’t want that for my kids.
Homeschooling allows me to give them more travel, volunteer and internship opportunities, and hands-on experiences that broaden their horizons. My hope is that by the time they head off to college - or wherever their young adult lives may take them - they’ll already have a clearer sense of what excites them and what doesn’t.
That knowledge is a game-changer for their future.
The Bigger Picture
So, would it be easier for me to get work done if I dropped my kids off at school every day?
Maybe.
But I didn’t choose homeschooling because it’s convenient. I chose it because my girls deserve a customized education, real-world exposure, and the freedom to discover their talents and passions.
And I want them to grow into young women who are well prepared to step fully into who they’re meant to be.
That’s the power of homeschooling.
And it’s why, as a working mom, I chose this path for my family.
