Creating a Balanced Summer for Your Homeschool Family

Creating a Balanced Summer for Your Homeschool Family

balance summer summer learning

When it comes to planning the summer, homeschool families often find themselves stuck between two tempting visions: a calendar packed with camps, trips, and exciting enrichment activities...or a laid-back season full of pajamas-till-noon, neighborhood walks, and slow days of simple joy.

I’ll be the first to admit it...I’ve tried both

Some summers, we’ve gone all in: we signed up for the camps, visited the museums, and mapped out road trips to create a summer full of intentional learning and new experiences. And I’ve loved seeing my kids explore new interests and make new friends in those settings!

But other summers? We’ve opted for slow mornings, spontaneous afternoon adventures, and stretches of unscheduled time that allowed us to simply be, as individuals and as a family.

And honestly, there’s value in both

The truth is, there’s no one "right way" to do summer.

Some families thrive with a structured summer full of activities that give kids new challenges and give parents a little breathing room (anybody else get excited for a good drop-off?!?🙋🏾‍♀️). Others find that the school year was full enough, and what they really need is a season of rest, flexibility, and connection.

Whether your family needs a summer of stimulation or stillness (or a little of both), the real win is choosing a rhythm that feels aligned with what your family needs

And if you're not really sure what you need, here are a few questions you can ask yourself when deciding just what kind of summer you need:

  • Are we feeling burned out and in need of a reset?
  • Are there new passions or interests my kids want to explore?
  • How much alone time (and together time) do we all need?
  • What does rest look like for me, my spouse (if applicable) and for my kids?

Your answers to these can help guide your plans in a way that feels nourishing and intentional

Because no matter what your summer looks like - whether you’re hopping from city to city or staying close to home - it’s still part of your homeschool journey. It’s all learning. It’s all connection. And it’s all worth it.

So here’s to a summer that fills your family’s cup, in whatever way you need most.
